About the Festival
Independent Cinema. Creative Community.
The Underdog Film Festival was founded in 2023 with a simple vision: to create a welcoming platform for independent filmmakers while introducing audiences to the extraordinary diversity of short filmmaking.
From the beginning, the festival has been about more than simply screening films. We believe that the best festivals create opportunities for people to meet, exchange ideas and discover new perspectives. By bringing filmmakers and audiences together in a relaxed and creative environment, the Underdog Film Festival has developed into an event where conversations continue long after the credits have rolled.
Every edition has helped shape the next. What started as an ambitious local initiative has grown into an international festival welcoming submissions and visitors from around the world, while remaining true to its founding philosophy: outstanding stories can come from anywhere.
A New Chapter
The 2027 edition marks an important milestone in the festival's development.
For the first time, the Underdog Film Festival is jointly hosted by Culture Club e.V. and Filmclub Wolfsburg e.V., bringing together two registered non-profit associations with a shared passion for independent cinema and cultural exchange.
While the festival's regular screenings continue to take place at Culture Shocks, the official Awards Ceremony moves to the Kino im Hallenbad, where the winning films will be presented on the big screen before the awards are announced.
As the festival continues to grow, we are also proud to introduce a dedicated competition for Experimental Shorts — a promise made during previous editions that we are delighted to fulfil in 2027.
Although the festival continues to evolve, its guiding principle remains unchanged: creating a welcoming space where filmmakers, artists and audiences can come together to celebrate creativity.
The Jury
The jury of the Underdog Film Festival is committed to recognising outstanding achievements in independent filmmaking.
The jury for the 2027 edition will be announced following the close of submissions. It will consist of members of the boards of Culture Club e.V. and Filmclub Wolfsburg e.V., alongside invited film professionals with experience in filmmaking, film education and cultural programming.
Together, they will evaluate the selected films across all competition categories and honour exceptional achievements in storytelling, creativity and cinematic craftsmanship.
Looking Ahead
New ideas, new partnerships and new filmmakers continue to shape the festival while preserving the welcoming atmosphere that has defined it from the beginning.
We are excited to begin this next chapter together with our audiences, filmmakers, partners and supporters, and we look forward to welcoming you to Wolfsburg for the 2027 Underdog Film Festival.
Our Co-Hosts
Culture Club e.V.
Culture Club e.V. grew out of a long-standing cultural initiative in Wolfsburg's city centre. Long before the association was officially founded in 2024, exhibitions, concerts, readings and creative events had already been organised around Culture Shocks, bringing together people from the worlds of art, literature, music and film.
As these projects continued to grow—including the creation of the Underdog Film Festival—it became clear that an independent organisation was needed to provide a stable foundation for future cultural initiatives.
Today, Culture Club e.V. promotes arts, culture and creative exchange through a diverse programme of exhibitions, workshops, concerts, film events and networking formats. By connecting artists, educational institutions, local organisations and businesses, the association creates opportunities for collaboration while making culture accessible to everyone.
At the heart of its work lies a simple belief: culture should inspire, connect people and encourage new perspectives.
Filmclub Wolfsburg e.V.
Beginning with the 2027 edition, Filmclub Wolfsburg e.V. joins the Underdog Film Festival as an equal co-host.
Founded to preserve and further develop cinema culture in Wolfsburg, the association operates the Kino im Hallenbad and is dedicated to creating a vibrant meeting place for film enthusiasts through carefully curated screenings, discussions and special events.
Through this partnership, the festival combines two complementary approaches to film culture: the open, creative atmosphere that has shaped the festival from the beginning and the cinematic tradition represented by one of Wolfsburg's most established independent cinemas.
Together, Culture Club e.V. and Filmclub Wolfsburg e.V. are committed to strengthening independent filmmaking and expanding the cultural landscape of the region.
Two Venues – One Festival
The Underdog Film Festival continues to be centred around Culture Shocks, where the regular festival screenings, workshops and networking events take place.
For many years, Culture Shocks has served as far more than a venue. It has become a meeting place for artists, musicians, writers and creatives from across the region, making it the ideal home for a festival built around conversation, collaboration and independent filmmaking.
Beginning in 2027, the festival's Awards Ceremony will take place at the Kino im Hallenbad, where the winning films will be screened as part of the official celebration.
By combining these two venues, the festival offers filmmakers and audiences the best of both worlds: an intimate creative environment for discovering new voices and a traditional cinema experience for celebrating outstanding achievements.
Meet the Team
Behind every festival is a dedicated group of people working throughout the year to turn ideas into reality.
The Underdog Film Festival is organised by a team of volunteers and professionals from a wide range of creative backgrounds. Together, they share a passion for independent cinema, cultural exchange and creating a festival that is as welcoming as it is professionally organised.
